Karadzic quiet since arrest

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 22 (UPI) -- Alleged war criminal Radovan Karadzic lived in Belgrade freely before his arrest on genocide charges, Serbian officials said Tuesday.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Karadzic disguised himself to live and work as practitioner of alternative medicine. He was fleeing authorities for 13 years.

Karazdic was indicted in 1995 for his alleged role in the massacre of nearly 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica earlier that year.

Serbia's war crimes prosecutor, Vladimir Vukcevic, said Karadzic has remained reticent since his arrest. A judge has ruled that he can be transferred to the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

"How convincing his false identity was, we can tell you that he has been freely walking in the city, being very public about his appearance," Vukcevic said. "Even the people he rented a flat from were unaware of who he was."
