DETROIT, July 22 (UPI) -- A woman who escaped from a Michigan prison more than 30 years ago and lived a blameless life before being recaptured faces new criminal charges.
Susan LeFevre, 53, was returned in May from California, where she was living outside San Diego, to complete her 10- to 20-year prison term for a drug conviction. On Monday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said LeFevre faces a consecutive five-year sentence if found guilty of escape, the Detroit Free Press reported.
"We cannot have people walking away from prison," Worthy said. "While it is admirable that Ms. LeFevre has made something of her life, she must accept responsibility for her earlier behavior."
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has received thousands of letters from people asking for clemency for LeFevre.
