SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif., July 21 (UPI) -- Two California men were ordered to spend time behind bars for setting a friend's groin area on fire as a joke, officials said.
Matthew Craig Pillers, 22, and Jack Brent Nicholas Keiffer, 19, did not contest felony charges of causing a fire that led to great bodily injury, court officials said.
Pillers was ordered Thursday to spend two years in state prison after turning down a sentence of 270 days in County jail with a probation period, the St. Louis Obispo (Calif.) Tribune reported.
Pillers said he would rather go to prison than be on parole and probation simultaneously.
Keiffer was ordered to spend 45 days in a county jail, 100 hours of community service and substance abuse education, prosecutors said.
The men were charged for catching Elliot Tuleja's crotch on fire as a joke Jan. 18, the newspaper said. The Tribune said Tuleja was treated for serious burns to his groin area.
