EU may keep Peking duck out of Britain

LONDON, July 21 (UPI) -- Peking duck could be removed from restaurants in Britain because many ovens needed to prepare the dish do not meet European Union standards, officials say.

Many ovens used to prepare the crispy duck, usually constructed in China and shipped to Britain, failed to comply with European rules regarding carbon monoxide emissions, The Telegraph reported Sunday.

London officials have permanently shut down ovens in 11 eateries, and another 39 received warnings they need to get new ovens to comply with regulations, the newspaper said.

The Telegraph said restaurant owners could have to fork over as much as $8,000 for new ovens that meet standards of gas watchdog Corgi.

"We are working closely with the Chinese community to make sure gas duck ovens which are normally imported directly from China and are not CE marked are safe for both restaurant workers and the public," Councilor Daniel Astaire said.
