WASHINGTON, July 21 (UPI) -- Democrats predicted Monday that probable Republican U.S. presidential nominee John McCain will face a funding squeeze, saying he spends more than he takes in.
Word of the alleged funding trouble came in a memo from the Democratic National Committee, The Hill newspaper reported.
The memo said McCain's campaign spent more than $5 million more than it raised last summer and the balance sheet again appears to be sliding into the red. Memo author Mike Gehrke said McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, is relying on credit cards. Senate disclosure forms showed last month McCain had a six-figure balance on his campaign cards.
The McCain campaign didn't respond directly to the allegations, The Hill reported, but a spokeswoman said, "We'll pass on taking advice from the DNC," and cited likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's backtracking on limiting his campaign to public funding.
