KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 19 (UPI) -- A bomb detonated and killed a Canadian soldier on patrol in Afghanistan's Kandahar province, military officials say.

The Canadian military identified the soldier as Cpl. Jim Hayward Arnal of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, CNN reported Saturday.

Arnal was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a hospital after Friday's bombing in Panjwayi district.

CNN said the soldier's death marked the 88th Canadian citizen to die in the Afghanistan conflict and the 22nd foreign national to die in the Asian country during July.

To date, Canada trails only the United States and Britain in the number of nationals killed in Afghanistan.
