Stairwell collapse probed after kids die

HOUSTON, July 18 (UPI) -- The mayor of Houston ordered a probe into a stairwell collapse that killed two children in a building that hadn't been inspected by city officials in 12 years.

Mayor Bill White did not say whether the collapse, which left David Vazquez, 10, and Miguel Angel Robledo, 4, dead, could have been avoided had the building been inspected regularly, the Houston Chronicle reported.

"Fortunately, this kind of accident is unusual, because staircases do bear the appropriate loads," he said. "Apartment owners should know that they have the principal and first responsibility for making sure that their apartments are safe."

Jose Castro, 9, who was injured in Wednesday's collapse, was at Texas Children's Hospital, the newspaper said Friday.

The 10-year-old's mother, Elvira Vazquez, said the boys were playing hide-and-seek when the stairwell fell.
