Sky diver loses prosthetic leg in midair

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y., July 18 (UPI) -- A New York state man was still waiting for the prosthetic leg to turn up after losing it a month ago during a parachute jump.

Scott Listemann of Poughkeepsie told the Poughkeepsie Journal that the leg came off while he was skydiving over the town of Gardiner last month. His parachute had just opened when he took a look down and found the leg had fallen off.

He said that he considered looking for the errant leg and trying to catch it in midair. But he decided that he should be careful to stay with the jump group because if he got separated from his companions and failed to catch the leg he would have trouble moving, the report said.

He put up fliers around Gardiner asking anyone who finds a prosthetic leg -- possibly still wearing a Nike sneaker -- to give him a call. No one has phoned yet, and Listemann says that the leg probably landed in the woods.

"As far as I know, my leg is hanging in a tree," he said.

Listemann, who lost his leg when a dump truck ran over his foot while he was doing highway work, said that he has continued to sky dive while he waits.

"I can't see a reason to stop doing the things I enjoy doing," he said.
