Poll: U.S. loses enthusiasm for Afghan war

WASHINGTON, July 18 (UPI) -- U.S. voters are less enthused about the war in Afghanistan, a poll released Friday indicated.

The ABC News/Washington Post survey showed that nearly half of U.S. respondents said they didn't consider the conflict to be worth fighting while 44 percent considered the campaign to be a success.

The results come as both Sen. John McCain and Barack Obama -- the presumptive major party nominees for president -- are calling for more troops to deal with the Taliban insurgency.

Respondents indicated frustration at the inability to snuff out the Taliban and their al-Qaida allies and wariness about the U.S. economic slowdown.

The national poll of 1,119 randomly selected adults was conducted by telephone July 10-13 and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
