Canada body-parts murder victim identified
CHICAGO, July 18 (UPI) -- Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis says he would welcome an offer for Illinois State Police to "come on down" and help in the city fight crime.
Weis diplomatically responded at a Thursday press conference to recent comments by Gov. Rod Blagojevich calling Chicago's rising crime rate "out of control," the Chicago Tribune reported Friday. Blagojevich offered state police and potentially National Guard troops, but Weis said the guard did not have needed police powers.
"I would welcome a partnership with the Illinois State Police," Weis said. "They are a professional, top-notch law enforcement agency. If they are willing to send more folks to come down here and work with us, I would say 'Please come on down.' "
The response came in contrast to comments to the newspaper by Alderman Pat O'Connor, who called the governor's offer disingenuous and damaging to Chicago's efforts to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
"We're one of the greatest cities in the world. For him to make it sound like this place is going to hell in a hand basket is very unfortunate," O'Connor said.
