VERNON, British Columbia, July 17 (UPI) -- A Canadian missionary couple will soon be returning home to recover from an attack and robbery in Kenya, say family members.

John Bergen, 70, and his wife Eloise, 63, were attacked July 10 by a gang of robbers armed with machetes. He suffered broken arms and a skull fracture while she was tied up and sexually assaulted. Seven people, including two former security guards at their fenced-in compound, have been arrested in the incident.

The couple had at planned to stay in Kenya. But the Bergen's daughter-in-law, Robin McGeogh, told CBC News that they have been convinced to return to Canada to receive better care for their injuries.

"Canada's got the really good rehab and the faster you get home and start a good rehab, the faster you can get out and do (things) like … end up back in Kenya," McGeogh told the CBC.
