Obama speaks on Iraq in Washington

WASHINGTON, July 16 (UPI) -- Barack Obama's campaign Wednesday chided Republican rival John McCain's latest proposal for more U.S. troops in Afghanistan as a flip-flop.

ABC News reported Obama's camp said McCain's call for three additional brigades of U.S. troops for the Afghan theater was a reversal of statements he made earlier that no reinforcements were required.

McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, said in New Mexico Tuesday that due to the success of the surge strategy in Iraq, more U.S. forces could be transferred to Afghanistan.

Obama, the probable Democratic presidential nominee, recently said that if elected, he would dispatch two brigades totaling about 10,000 troops to take on the Taliban.
