Voodoo doll found in commissioner's yard

DELTONA, Fla., July 15 (UPI) -- A voodoo doll was found in a Deltona, Fla., city commissioner's front yard, a sheriff's deputy said.

Commissioner Zenaida Denizac's face was on the 5-inch doll, which had pins stuck in it, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Tuesday.

Denizac's husband, Jose, told authorities he found the voodoo doll at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

"It's too early in the investigation to determine if this is a hate crime," Volusia County sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.

Zenaida Denizac told deputies she had received several anonymous letters critical of her work with the city and the Volusia County Hispanic Association, a report says.

"When you have a good leader, when you have a leader of integrity, there are always small minds out there trying to throw stones or harass that leader," said Denizac, a teacher at Pine Ridge High in Deltona. "Unless God takes me out, I'm going nowhere."

Other commissioners said they have received threatening letters or had their property vandalized during their time in office.

Commissioner Michele McFall-Conte, for instance, said someone sent her a letter threatening to cut her throat, while Vice Mayor Michael Carmolingo said he has found "unspeakable things" in his mailbox.
