Britain considers youth curfews

LONDON, July 13 (UPI) -- British politicians say they're considering instituting youth curfews aimed at reining in a wave of teen violence and slayings.

After a week in which six people were stabbed to death in a 24-hour period, including London's 20th teenage death from violence, ruling Labor Party officials said they were drawing up plans to target some areas of the country with a 9 p.m. teen curfew, The Sunday Times of London reported.

British Environment Minister Phil Woolas told the newspaper existing legislation hasn't tempered youth violence, saying, "There are parts of the country where for periods of time, you should be able to introduce curfews. We need a heavy police presence and fines for parents."

A source from the prime minister's office told the newspaper there are no immediate plans for a nationwide curfew, but added, "It is something we might consider trialing in hotspot areas."

Government officials told the Sunday Times the country needs to change its current confusing patchwork of local rules on youth curfews and better coordinate its policing efforts.
