S. Saskatchewan cleans up after twisters

REGINA, Saskatchewan, July 11 (UPI) -- Cleanup efforts were under way Friday in several towns in Canada's central province of Saskatchewan battered by a tornado and powerful storms.

Environment Canada confirmed at least one tornado touched down in the small town of Carlyle Thursday night, the Regina Leader-Post reported.

Tornado warnings were in effect in much of southern Saskatchewan through the evening, although Carlyle Fire Chief Trent Lee said at first, he wasn't sure what had happened.

"We have buildings here with roofs gone, semi-trailers tipped over. There are trees on every corner down. Power lines are down, transformers. We're going to be a world of hurt in the morning," Lee told the newspaper.

There was also a gas leak at a greenhouse that was flattened, and a small evacuation was ordered until it was shut off, Lee said.

More than 100 miles to the north in Yorkton, winds ripped the roof off a hardware store and blew it onto vehicles at a nearly car lot, NewsTalk 650 in Regina reported.

There was no immediate report of injuries, and damage assessment was still going on at midday Friday.
