Canadian missionaries recovering in Kenya

KITALE, Kenya, July 11 (UPI) -- A Canadian missionary couple savagely attacked in their home in Kenya is recovering despite massive injuries, their charity said.

John Bergen, 70, and his wife Eloise, 66, were attacked in a home invasion in the agricultural town of Kitale around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, a correspondent for Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

A group of men carrying clubs and machetes ambushed the husband outside, the report said.

"They attacked John outside first then kind of threw him in the bushes. Then they went in the house and attacked and tied up and beat Eloise and ransacked the whole place," said Steven Pippin, a member of their Hope for the Nations missionary group.

Ralph Bromley, president of the charity, told CTV News Friday morning the couple was now in stable condition in a Nairobi hospital. He said John Bergen sustained fractures to his skull, jaw, arms, knee and leg and was anesthetized for three hours while doctors stitched his slash wounds. His wife was badly beaten but had no fractures, the report said.

The newspaper said seven men, including two security guards, were arrested Thursday night.
