Teens win $9,000 in discrimination case

LONDON, July 9 (UPI) -- Three teenagers were awarded nearly $9,000 after they claimed workers at a London beauty salon refused to paint their nails because they are disabled.

Amy Fox, 19, Aruna Gill, 17, and Jemimah Kumba, 14, were with two caretakers when they arrived at London's Visage Hair and Beauty salon to have their nails painted in August 2006, the Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

Gill and Kumba, who use wheelchairs and have cerebral palsy and epilepsy, were allegedly told there wasn't "enough room" for them in the salon.

Solicitor Claire Dawson told the newspaper a worker said the girls were "scaring off other customers."

Salon owner Parmail Kaur was able to settle the case out of court and said allegations that her employees refused to serve the teens because of their disabilities are untrue.

"It was all a misunderstanding. They were refused the service because we were too busy," she told the Daily Mail.
