LAS VEGAS, July 9 (UPI) -- Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs was hospitalized in a Las Vegas facility, but police would not reveal why.

Las Vegas police Officer Jose Montoya said Jeffs was taken from a Kingman, Ariz., jail about 100 miles away to the Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas on Tuesday, CNN reported Wednesday.

"I can't tell you why he was brought here or what his condition is," Montoya said, referring questions to the Mohave County, Ariz., Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Tom Sheahan said Kingman jail staff noticed Jeffs seemed to be in poor health, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Sheahan said Jeffs had no other known medical problems while at the Kingman jail.

Jeffs, 52, is the leader of the estimated 10,000-member Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is awaiting trial on 10 felony charges of sexual conduct with a minor, incest and conspiracy to commit sexual conduct with a minor, CNN reported.

Jeffs was sentenced in November to two consecutive five-years-to-life prison terms in Utah for his conviction on two charges of being an accomplice to rape in a marriage he performed in 2001.
