Young woman gets damages for snapped heel

KNUTSFORD, England, July 8 (UPI) -- A defunct chain of British shoe stores must pay a university student for pain and suffering she endured when a high heel snapped, leading to a broken ankle.

Sophie King, 20, of Knutsford in Cheshire, now a student at the University of Durham, was still in high school at the time of the mishap in 2004. She said that the heel broke the first time she wore the shoes at the beginning of a night out with friends, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Because she did not want to ruin everyone's evening, she went on to a bar, where she passed out.

King bought her shoes at Dolcis, a chain that has since gone out of business. A court awarded her 7,200 pounds ($14,400) in damages, payable by Dolcis' parent company.

The injury forced King to give up active sports.
