MADRID, July 7 (UPI) -- Thirteen people were hurt Monday in the start of Spain's annual Running of the Bulls, though none seriously, emergency officials said.

In the first day of running from bulls set free in the streets of Pamplona, 13 participants received varying scrapes and bruises, including bashed ribs though none were gored or hurt badly, El Pais reported online.

The Running of the Bulls is an internationally acclaimed event that became world renowned with the publication of Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises" in which characters attend the festivities in Pamplona.
