Crews may try rescuing trapped sea lion

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 7 (UPI) -- Animal rescuers likely will keep trying to remove a sea lion trapped in shallow waters along a concrete channel of a creek in California, officials say.

The sea lion has spent 10 days in waters along the San Tomas Aquino/Saratoga Creek Trail in Santa Clara, Calif., not far from the San Tomas Expressway, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported Monday.

Jim Oswald, spokesman for the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, Calif., said crews had already made two unsuccessful attempts to rescue the large aquatic mammal.

"We just try to keep a watch on the situation," he said, adding that the animal "ended up in the wrong place," and crews were planning their next step Monday.

Officials have not said how the 6-foot, 200-pound animal managed to travel from San Francisco Bay along the channel.

The sea lion, first seen June 27, swam quickly around a 50-yard area of the channel Sunday night as it looked for a way out, the newspaper said.
