ISTANBUL, Turkey, July 6 (UPI) -- Retired Turkish Gens. Sener Eruygur and Hursit Tolon were arrested Sunday in conjunction with the so-called "Ergenekon" probe, Turkish media reported.
The Turkish Press said Sunday the retired military leaders were the most recent suspects to be detained as part of the growing investigation into the "Ergenekon" criminal network.
The existence of the crime syndicate was revealed June 12, 2007, after authorities found hand grenades and other explosives in a home in Istanbul.
As the investigation into the network grew, a number of top Turkish officials were arrested or questioned.
Among those individuals was retired Adm. Ilker Guven and Mustafa Balbay, a Cumhuriyet newspaper official stationed in Ankara.
The Turkish Press said several suspects, including Eruygur and Tolon, have been imprisoned for their alleged part in the network.
