Individuals close to the investigation into the slaying of Thomas Wales say a federal grand jury has subpoenaed state paternity records to determine if the unidentified 47-year-old suspect did hire another man to take the 1994 paternity test in his place, The Seattle Times reported Sunday.
An unidentified former federal law enforcement official said the alleged crime was uncovered during the investigation into the 2001 shooting death of Wales.
The pilot accused of killing Wales has yet to be charged in relation to either crime and has maintained his innocence, the Times said.
The paternity test had been ordered by the state Department of Social and Health Services as part of its attempt to identify the biological father of an 8-year-old boy.
The test became necessary when the boy's mother applied for state welfare benefits and state officials wanted to find his father to help her collect child-support payments, the newspaper reported.
