MOSUL, Iraq, July 5 (UPI) -- A police officer and a civilian were killed Saturday in Mosul when a push cart exploded and gunfire erupted, the U.S. military in Iraq says.

Military officials told CNN the bombing in the Nineveh province city killed an Iraqi civilian and wounded five others, including two police officers.

Following the blast, another police officer was shot and killed by two suspected al-Qaida militants, the military says.

The individuals suspected of perpetrating the deadly attack were apprehended by police, CNN said.

The U.S. news network said Mosul has long been a main focus of al-Qaida operations and therefore has been targeted by U.S. and Iraqi forces.
