LONDON, July 4 (UPI) -- British officials say tight restrictions have been placed on an Algerian with alleged ties to al-Qaida while he remains free on bail.
The man, identified in legal documents only as "U," was released from the maximum-security Long Lartin Prison in Worcestershire this week, The Daily Mail reported. He had been in custody for seven years, but Britain was unable to charge him due to lack of evidence or to deport him because of fears he would be tortured in Algeria.
U was indicted in the United States on charges of plotting to blow up Los Angeles International Airport after an alleged confederate was caught at the Canadian border with explosives. But the other man later retracted statements he had made that U was the mastermind of the plan.
British officials said U will be under 24-hour electronic monitoring and forbidden to leave his house. Courts have banned authorities from releasing his address or even naming the town in which he is living.
