Nanny died rescuing toddler

OYSTER BAY, N.Y., July 4 (UPI) -- An Oyster Bay, N.Y., family says their live-in nanny died heroically while trying to save a 3-year-old boy who was sinking in the family's pool.

Matthew Foglia said his children's nanny, Ana Montana, 60, was watching the boy and his two older siblings in the family pool when he slipped out of his life jacket and began sinking, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

Neighbors witnessed Montana, who could not swim, jumping into the pool to save the child.

The boy's mother was drawn to the pool by the children's cries and Foglia said that thanks to Montana's actions, she was able to save the child. However, Montana suffered cardiac failure and was declared dead at North Shore University hospital.

"She definitely saved my son," Foglia said. "I love my son, but I feel terrible about our nanny."

Neighbor Jennifer Pick hailed Montana's final actions as "an incredibly heartbreaking act of courage."

"If anything else, what that says is that Ana wanted that baby to be safe and that's why she was there," she said.
