FORT WORTH, Texas, July 3 (UPI) -- Rescue officials in Fort Worth, Texas, said they found the body of a man who drowned in a lake trying to reach his daughter's air mattress.

Martin Tavera, 45, was with relatives and friends Wednesday when he decided to jump into Marine Creek Lake and swim out to get the mattress, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Witnesses said Tavera started calling out for help when he was at least 75 yards from the beach.

Tavera disappeared under the water's surface at about 7:30 p.m. as a number of people attempted to swim to him.

Officials said they discovered his lifeless body at about 10 p.m.
