Man gets life in prison for poisoning wife

WOBURN, Mass., July 3 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts judge gave a man an automatic life prison sentence without parole for killing his wife by slipping antifreeze into her Gatorade.

James Keown, 34, was convicted of first-degree murder by a Middlesex Superior Court Wednesday in the killing of Julie Oldag Keown, 31, the Boston Herald reported.

"I am truly in the presence of an evil human being." The life sentence may "bring some peace, some closure and some justice to those who loved Julie Keown," Judge Sandra Hamlin said at the sentencing.

Keown, a former radio talk show host, was found guilty of causing his wife's slow, painful death by putting antifreeze in her Gatorade in 2004.

Julie was in a coma in September 2004 before she died, the newspaper said. Prosecutors claimed Keown killed his wife to get a $250,000 life-insurance policy.
