NEW YORK, July 2 (UPI) -- A New York man was arrested after his pit bulls attacked a 90-year-old neighbor, injuring him so badly that at least one leg was amputated.

Henry Piotrowski was in critical condition Wednesday, a day after the dog attack, The New York Times reported.

James McNair, a registered sex offender, faces a series of charges, including having unleashed dogs and failing to have collars or dog tags on the two pit bulls, William Smith, a spokesman for the Staten Island district attorney, said. Smith said that McNair served a prison sentence for third-degree rape.

A neighbor told the Times that Piotrowski was attacked Tuesday morning in his own yard. Reginald Bell said that he picked up a butcher knife and went after the dogs, scaring them off.

"These dogs ate that man," Mr. Bell said. "They just ate him."

Piotrowski was taken to Richmond University Medical Center. His cousin said that one leg was amputated.

The dogs were euthanized and thei carcasses will be tested for rabies, officials said.
