CHICAGO, July 2 (UPI) -- Chicago authorities say a woman who allegedly killed a police officer Wednesday was hospitalized in critical condition after being felled by police bullets.

The incident happened early Wednesday across the street from a police station on the city's North Side, where police say the woman shot and killed Officer Richard Francis, 60, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Francis had responded to a street disturbance when the woman allegedly grabbed his gun and shot him in the head. Other officers responded and shot the woman when she allegedly also threatened them, the newspaper said.

"Our focus right now is on (Francis') family. It's a tragic loss for his family, it's a terrible loss for the Chicago Police Department," Superintendent Jody Weis told reporters outside the Illinois Masonic Medical Center. "It's a stark reminder of what the dangers that the officers of this department face every day."

He said the woman was being treated at the hospital.
