NEW ORLEANS, June 30 (UPI) -- The head of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development visited New Orleans Monday to tour housing communities and meet with the mayor.
While Secretary Steve Preston was in New Orleans he visited public housing neighborhoods, took part in a community center groundbreaking ceremony and met residents, HUD said.
He also spoke with Mayor Ray Nagin to touch base regarding the city's reconstruction progress since Hurricane Katrina hit nearly three years ago.
"Our commitment to this region continues, which is why it was important to me to get a first-hand look at the city's progress and challenges early in my new role," Preston said. "I welcome the opportunity to partner with state and local leaders to help continue the rebuilding efforts underway."
