WASHINGTON, June 29 (UPI) -- The Democratic and Republican candidates for U.S. president need different qualities in a vice presidential running mate, political analysts say.
The Politico reported Sunday that Republican strategists it surveyed said John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee, needs a running mate with business experience who could help to offset his weakness on economic issues.
Among possible running mates is former eBay Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman, 51. Last month she raised $2.5 million for the presumptive Republican nominee at an event at her Silicon Valley, Calif., home, and she's rumored to be considering a run for California governor in 2010.
Then there is Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the House's chief deputy Republican whip. He is well-respected among conservatives for his record on fiscal and military issues, GOP sources say.
On the Democratic side, analysts say Barack Obama needs an older running mate with solidly centrist views to reassure voters concerned about the Illinois senator's relative inexperience and perceived liberal bent.
Among possible running mates: William Cohen, the former Republican senator from Maine and a Clinton administration Defense secretary. Observers say having him on the Democratic ticket would boost Obama's military credentials.
Then there is Robert Rubin, treasury secretary in the Clinton administration. Analysts said he would bring a wealth of economic expertise.
