Spain: Minister condemned for scarf remark

MADRID, June 28 (UPI) -- Muslims in Spain were outraged by remarks by the country's equality minister criticizing the Islamic headscarf worn by women.

Equality Minister Bibiana Aido alleged the scarves were a violation "of human rights and promoted inequality" among Muslim men and women, El Pais reported Friday.

The minister's remarks sparked condemnation among Spain's Muslims, more than half a million strong.

Spanish Muslim representatives said Aido should not talk about what she "didn't know about," referring to the Islamic tradition of women covering their hair in public.
