PORT BLAIR, India, June 27 (UPI) -- An undersea earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter Scale struck near India's Andaman islands in the Indian Ocean Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake was centered about 70 miles southwest of Port Blair, the archipelago's civilian administrator said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.
Residents fled their homes as the quake triggered panic and brought back fears of a repeat of the devastating tsunami that flooded the isolated chain four years ago, officials and witnesses said.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no "destructive widespread tsunami threat."
