Nearly 700 dogs rescued from puppy mill

LYLES, Tenn., June 26 (UPI) -- Authorities have seized nearly 700 dogs in what the Humane Society of the United States is calling the largest "puppy mill" rescue ever conducted in Tennessee.

The Wednesday raids at Pine Bluff Kennels in Hickman County found a wide variety of improperly cared for dogs that were being sold on the Internet for prices ranging prices from $150 to $1,000, the Nashville Tennessean reported Thursday.

"We are looking at about 700 animals right now, maybe more will be added to that count," said spokesperson Stephanie Shain, describing dogs without water, health problems and often never let out of their feces-filled cages. "The conditions are extremely poor. They are typical of a breeding operation like this, what we call a puppy mill."
