MEXICO CITY, June 26 (UPI) -- A top police commander was killed in Mexican City Thursday, the latest in a series of police killings amid a federal effort to clamp down on drug gangs.

Igor Labastida was eating lunch when he was killed by two unidentified gunmen, El universal reported online.

The federal police commander's death was the latest in a series of killings targeting top authorities.

A top police official in Mexico was found dead last month in the trunk of a car in Mexico City, along with another officer, authorities said.

The bodies of Victor Enrique Payan and another officer were found with a note attached to them warning others not to join the Sinaloa drug gang in northern Mexico.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has sent thousands of troops to the border area to help combat violence associated with drug trafficking.
