Lost hikers found safe in California

FRESNO, Calif., June 26 (UPI) -- Eleven hikers missing since the weekend were found safe Wednesday in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range, authorities said.

Fresno County sheriff's deputies confirmed to KMPH-TV in Fresno that the two adult and nine teen Outward Bound members phoned the wilderness recreation group and reported their location. Outward Bound then called authorities who located the hikers at Florence Lake, which is outside the area searchers had been looking, the TV station reported.

Ground and air searchers had been combing the region around Courtwright Reservoir, where the hikers had last been seen. The search started after the group failed to meet up with a third guide as planned Saturday as part of their two-week camping expedition.

The group had planned to climb Mount Shinn.
