Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington

SAN FRANCISCO, June 25 (UPI) -- Former White House spokesman Scott McClellan says he may jump the Republican ship for this year's U.S. presidential election.

"I haven't made any long-term decisions," McClellan told an audience in San Francisco, adding he hasn't ruled out registering as a Democrat or voting Democratic in the November presidential election, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.

McClellan wrote, "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception," creating a stir because of its portrayal of President George Bush and top White House officials.

McClellan said his vote could hinge on which presidential candidate -- Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., or Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. -- remains true to his word about running an issues-oriented, positive campaign, ending the "game of gotcha politics" in Washington.

"I certainly got caught up in it, like a lot of people in Washington do," he told the Commonwealth Club Tuesday. "You get attacked and you automatically want to attack back."

Both candidates also need to provide "specific answers" about their policies on the Iraq war, McClellan said. In turn, media also must hold the candidates accountable on their issues and policies as well.
