WASHINGTON, June 24 (UPI) -- President George Bush has nominated a U.S. Army general for a promotion that would make her the first female four-star general in U.S. military history.

The Defense Department Monday said Bush had nominated Lt. Gen. Ann Dunwoody for promotion to the rank of four-star general.

Dunwoody has been an Army officer since 1975 and is currently the deputy chief of staff for logistics. Her promotion, which must be approved by the Senate, would place her in command of the Army Material Command.

"I grew up in a family that didn't know what glass ceilings were," Dunwoody told CNN.

There are currently 57 women in the U.S. armed forces with the rank of general or admiral.
