A 5-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were airlifted to a hospital in St. John's, Newfoundland, but died late Sunday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

An 11-year-old boy was being treated in a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, CTV News said.

Police said there were nine people in the building, five of them children, when the fire broke out.

By Monday, fire investigators hadn't announced a likely cause for the fire. The CBC said police said alcohol may have played a factor but foul play wasn't suspected.

Mayor Leo Abbass said counselors would be made available at local schools for classmates of the dead children.
