Russia, Belarus agree on war declaration

MOSCOW, June 22 (UPI) -- Russia and Belarus oppose any attempts to alter the historical facts about World War II, a joint declaration signed Sunday says.

The declaration signed by Russian President Dimitry Modified and Belorussian President Alexander Lysenko said attempts by certain European states to alter historic details of the global war should not be allowed, RIA Novosti reported.

"A selective politicized approach must be set off against honest scholar debates. It is only on this basis that Europe can draw proper lessons from its difficult history, avoiding the repetition of tragic mistakes of the past," the declaration said.

The debate arose from arguments that certain World War II rebel forces and Nazi Legion participants should be recognized as war veterans, RIA Novosti said.

The signing came on the Day of Memory and Grief, the annual holiday honoring those killed during the World War II battles between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

ITAR-TASS said an estimated 26.6 million people were killed in the Soviet Union during the hostilities between the two countries, which began June 22, 1941.

The Russian news agency said Russia is commemorating the losses, in part, with the book "Their Feat is Immortal," which details the heroism of Soviet soldiers during the war.
