Colombian hostage appears in video

BOGOTA, June 22 (UPI) -- Leftist rebels in Colombia have released a video showing a politician held in captivity as proof he is still alive, El Tiempo newspaper reported Sunday.

Sigifredo Lopez appeared in a video shown on Colombian television in which he asks the government to reach an agreement with the rebels to secure the release of himself and other hostages.

Lopez was among 12 politicians abducted in broad daylight by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, in 2002. He is the only survivor, however.

The FARC has been battling the Colombian government for decades.
