New York crane taken out of commission

NEW YORK, June 21 (UPI) -- Construction crews were dismantling a crane in New York Saturday similar to two others that collapsed in the city earlier this year, officials said.

The crane in the city's downtown was being used to construct a new hotel and was ordered taken down by city officials after they discovered cracks in it, CNN reported.

New York's acting buildings commissioner told the network that the department wants "to err on the side of caution in the interest of the public's safety," adding that the model of the crane was the same as two others that have collapsed this year, killing nine people.
