PRESIDENT ROBERT MUGABE OF ZIMBABWE SPEAKS AT THE UNITED NATIONS IN NEW YORK

HARARE, Zimbabwe, June 20 (UPI) -- The campaign team for Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is divided on what to do if he loses a runoff election next week, an official said.

The split among Mugabe's supporters has created a situation that potentially could allow military officials to gain additional power in Zimbabwe, the official said in a Business Day report Friday.

"Some want him to go peacefully, while others say he must fight back by whatever means," said the official, who was not identified. "This situation has created room for the army to get into power, and create a regime geared to impose order by force."

Mugabe has said he is prepared to "go to war" if his political rival, Morgan Tsvangirai, is successful in his bid to gain control of the African country, Business Day reported.

"We are prepared to fight for our country ...," Mugabe said.
