5 million haven't applied for stimulus

WASHINGTON, June 19 (UPI) -- The Internal Revenue Service says it is looking for millions of U.S. residents who haven't filed tax returns and therefore can't qualify for stimulus checks.

The 5 million residents are mainly senior citizens and veterans, reports said.

The IRS told CNN it has sent out information packets to 20.5 million recipients of Social Security and veterans benefits to explain how to claim their checks, and about 15 million have responded. The agency is trying to reach the others with an aggressive public relations campaign.

Those left out normally would not have to file tax returns because of low income or exemptions.

The Kansas City (Mo.) Star says about 29,000 low-income seniors and disabled veterans in the city area who are eligible for stimulus checks still haven't applied for them.
