NEW YORK, June 18 (UPI) -- Michelle Obama, the wife of presumptive Democratic U.S. presidential nominee Barack Obama, said Wednesday she has always been proud of the United States.
In an appearance on ABC's "The View," Obama said her quote about pride in the United States was misrepresented and she had been referring to the nation's political process.
Obama touched off a storm of negative publicity when she said in a speech: "For the first time in my adult life I am really proud of my country."
"I am proud of my country, without a doubt," she said in answer to an opening question from co-host Barbara Walters.
"What I was talking about was having a pride in the political process. People are engaged. … I am proud of my country. Nowhere else would my story be possible."
