Toddler abandoned in Indiana Wal-Mart

FRANKFORT, Ind., June 17 (UPI) -- Indiana police are trying to find the family of a toddler abandoned in a Wal-Mart store with a note and a backpack holding toys, diapers and a bottle.

Investigators believe that the boy's mother was the one who wrote the note, handwritten in Spanish, the Lafayette Journal & Courier reported. She said that she was an immigrant from Guatemala and that her husband left her 10 months ago and she has no way to provide for her child.

Employees found the boy Friday in the fabric department of a Wal-Mart in Frankfort.

"We believe she left him hoping that someone would take care of him," Deputy Police Chief Randy Emery said. "We're trying to follow up where we can. But right now, we can't even say for sure that the note is authentic. We don't know if he may have been kidnapped."

Major Jeff Ward, a Frankfort detective, said that the boy appears to understand English but investigators are unsure if he can speak the language. He said that no one has reported him missing.

Investigators are checking videotapes from Wal-Mart security cameras to see if they can spot someone with the child.
