Police to open McCann file

PRAIA DA LUZ, Portugal, June 17 (UPI) -- The parents of a British girl who went missing in a Portugal resort town will have full access to the case files, an official said.

Gerry and Kate McCann will then be able to see what evidence police have against them in the disappearance of their daughter, Madeleine, in Pria da Luz, Portugal, the Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Attorney General Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro made the announcement to the newspaper 24 Horas.

"From July, the (Madeleine) case will cease to be covered by judicial secrecy, and will be available to consultation by all parties involved," he was quoted as saying. "I do not know which date, but in July the case ceases to be covered by judicial secrecy."

The McCanns were made official suspects last September but have never been arrested or charged, and have denied any wrongdoing.

The period of judicial secrecy is normally lifted in Portugal after eight months, but Investigating Judge Pedro Frias has granted extensions after state prosecutor Jose Magalhaese Menezes argued the case is "exceptionally complicated."
