Woman killed when SUV strikes churchgoers

VENICE, Calif., June 16 (UPI) -- One person was killed and three others were injured Sunday when an SUV plowed into a crowd of churchgoers in Venice, Calif.

Authorities say the accident happened in front of St. Mark Catholic Church when the driver accidentally stepped on the accelerator after her daughter suffered a seizure in the vehicle, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

St. Mark's pastor, the Rev. Michael Rocha, said more than 300 people attended noon mass but only 30 parishioners were standing on the sidewalk when the SUV jumped the curb shortly after 1 p.m.

Witnesses described the scene as pandemonium, the newspaper said.

The vehicle pinned one man against a flowerbed and struck several women.

Four people were taken to the hospital

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department said a 28-year-old woman died at the hospital.
