Rough weather hampers Myanmar aid efforts

YANGON, Myanmar, June 16 (UPI) -- Relief workers said they were having trouble getting aid to Myanmar residents because of severe weather in the country's monsoon season.

United Nations Children's Fund spokesman Michael Bociurkiw said workers with his organization were going up against intense winds and rain as they flew helicopters into cyclone-damaged areas of Myanmar.

"Monsoon season has come to Myanmar. It is very very difficult to deliver aid even in very large helicopters. But we are getting out there and putting up with the elements," he told CNN.

Bociurkiw said humanitarian groups have made it into the Irrawaddy delta region, but there is still a strong need for help in many areas.
